I've made two small improvements to this patch:

1) Using the gain slider to change the gain of a muted devices now
   results in changing the mute-state to unmuted (clearing the saved
   value). In the first version the mute-state was unchanged and
   therefore inconsistent with the de facto unmuted device.
2) The mute button is now included in the X application defaults file
   Aupanel.ad (what I forgot to do in the first version).

Attached to this mail are a complete patch against NAS version 1.7b
(file nas-aupanel-mute-version2.patch) and a patch against a NAS version
1.7b tree with my first patch already applied
(nas-aupanel-mute-version1-to-version2.patch).

I've tested the patched aupanel on linux/x86 and solaris/SPARC.
