Have not posted in a bit so I decided to throw out this little tid bit... I have started an intro to the game on my weblog Grendels Grimoire. http://chaos.rothrin.net/clog/index.php?itemid=16 I'd encourage you to check it out and provide some feedback. The idea is to use this overview as an intro for potential players. If response is good I plan on adding a basic strategy guide. (And yes, I built that site raw, from a base install of Nucleus...) An interesting side note, I discovered Grendel (the comic) in roughly the same time frame as Conquest. - Cataboligne ---------------------------------------------- 3 4 | 2 \|/ 5--*----> 1 Thing is facing this direction /|\ 6 | 8 7 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hehe, I like it. I think Dave was going to work on a 'tutorial' based on the 'Tips for new players' section in the readme. A good tutorial is needed. :) On the page you listed, a few comments: - The first GL pic, is an old one. We aren't using those old ship textures anymore. We're using your new and improved versions. - I remember playing this with a 1200bd modem. Talk about frustration :) - The original conquest only allowed eng/weap allocations in the 40-60% range - torpedos travel at different speeds depending on the ship that fired them: - kli/fed (original), Destroyer (now): warp 12 - rom (original), Cruiser (now): warp 10 - ori (original), Scout (now): warp 14 - The 'improved' GL client view isn't really what you see now, especially as regards the shields. Murisak is not a black hole. Black holes do not yet exist in conquest :) - The background 'grendel?' stuff does not really relate to Conquest does it? :) You should have exploding romulan scum there instead, heheh. Maybe this could be the basis of a wikipedia entry for Conquest :) But this looks nice - let me know when you are satified with it and I'll add a link to it on the conq homepage... > > - Cataboligne > > ---------------------------------------------- > 3 > 4 | 2 > \|/ > 5--*----> 1 Thing is facing this direction > /|\ > 6 | 8 > 7 > -- Jon Trulson mailto:jon at radscan.com #include "No Kill I" -Horta From god.000 at gmail.com Mon Oct 16 15:57:32 2006 From: god.000 at gmail.com (Almighty Tallest Cataboligne) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 21:57:32 +0000 Subject: [conquest] Re: game intro In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Conquistadors... Some of it seemed ill-worded (difficult to understand). Other parts made me laugh in fond remembrance of battles long gone. I especially like the 'strategy' tips :) So true. I did disagree with the etiquette mentions in two areas: - that if you chase an opponent into his home system and kill him, and he regens back and comes after you (who is probably damaged or low on fuel) is somehow not honourable. Au Contraire.... That's part of the game. Hint: Don't kill an opponent in an area where he will regen with a new ship and kill you (like his home system) :) If you do, then good luck :) It's possible to get out of those situations - I have succeeded in simply cloaking and waiting for fuel/dam to regen as a last resort. Boring, but can work. Also, did't I do that to you once, twice? :) - that attacking a vacant ship is dishonourable. Sorry, but if I find vacant warlike ships, I will kill them for the easy kill points. I have even successfully hunted cloaked vacant ships too :) If you want to go vacant, then hide. Go somewhere out of the way and cloak. Maybe leave your shields up. Don't expect to be immune from attack just because you are vacant. :) The goal in war is to win. -- Jon Trulson mailto:jon at radscan.com #include "No Kill I" -Horta From dwpayne at gravitic.com Fri Oct 20 13:16:42 2006 From: dwpayne at gravitic.com (David W. At that time I will give you some feedback. Especially looking forward to reading about macros which was not in the page I checked. I sincerely believe the newbies need some real help in that area. They do not recognize the true value of some well thought out macros. As far as the etiquette..... I tend to agree with Jon. This is a game where you CYA or loose it. Better to play well, play safe, play RTS than depend on your competition to abide by a set of arbitrary rules. Looking forward to rereading the page. Thats why they are "suggested". There is of course no way to enforce any of that on players (the bastard cheating operator must be another matter) and whats more it should not be forced on players by code. The etiquette section is really intended for veterans of the game and server ops. I know for a fact some of the stuff mentioned under "Good sportsman-ship" can make a new player feel pretty bad about the game. I'd just like to see them have a fair chance of playing for awhile before they give up. I myself have gotten upset over slingshot suprise attacks, being harrased endlessly while trying to coup, and pirate players (not neccisarily recently mind you...) And I know in the VAX days of old some players quit (forever) because of stuff I mentioned in the VAX etiquette - http://www.radscan.com/conquest/cq-ml/msg00043.html And of course the "combat tactics" and "art of conquest" strategy sections mention all manner of CYA in many situations. If you can think of better ways to present that and the mentioned intent let me know. -Cataboligne ---------------------------------------------- 3 4 | 2 \|/ 5--*----> 1 Thing is facing this direction /|\ 6 | 8 7 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As for cheating oper's, I've certainly played games where the oper's cheating (not on Conquest though). I simply stop playing on their servers. So does everyone else eventually :) A player could also post a complaint to this list. > The etiquette section is really intended for veterans of the game and server > ops.
